COURSE PRESENTATION
Pain Medicine is a branch of Medicine that employs an interdisciplinary approach for mitigating the suffering and improving the quality of life of those living with Chronic Pain. Chronic Pain is a major public health issue with a devastating human, economic and social impact. There are legal, regulatory, cultural and economic factors that negatively affect treatment consequently inducing a fundamental misunderstanding of pain. Untreated Pain can drive to depression, frequent doctor visits, absenteeism, job loss and an eventual need for carers.

Assessing and relieving pain is the responsibility of all clinicians who care for patients with chronic
pain potentially avoiding the frustration and anxiety of continued unsuccessful treatments. A proper chronic pain treatment plan may only be developed after the aknowledgement of the basic pathophysiology of the pain pathways (Baron), accentuating the importance of pain-related disciplines in the medical education.

Pain Education means better knowledge, better tools, better approach, better diagnosis, better treatment and better care. Pain Education at the service of a health care professional requires adequate tools in order to facilitate the diagnose, the treatment and the communication with the
patients.

This course is a hands-on approach to Pain Medicine.
